A Winston-Salem woman faces up to 16 years in prison after being convicted in connection with the 2023 shooting of another woman following a long-running dispute, according to the Forsyth County District Attorney’s Office.

Lasonya Renee Jones, 55, was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The charges stem from an Oct. 27, 2023, shooting in the 1600 block of North Cherry Street in Winston-Salem.

According to prosecutors, Winston-Salem police responded to reports of a shooting around 9:14 p.m. Officers learned the victim, Carissa Marie Provenzano, had already been transported to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center by her brother.

Investigators determined Jones had left the scene before officers arrived. Witnesses later identified her as the suspect.

The District Attorney’s Office said the shooting followed a dispute between Jones and Provenzano that had been ongoing for several weeks. On the night of the incident, the two argued before Jones allegedly assaulted Provenzano by spitting on her, biting her and striking her in the head with a liquor bottle.

Prosecutors said Jones left the area but returned a short time later with several other people, and the group attacked Provenzano a second time.

At the end of the second confrontation, Jones allegedly displayed a handgun and shouted, “I’ve got something for that,” before firing a single shot that struck Provenzano in the chest.

Provenzano, who authorities said was unarmed, survived the shooting.

“We will simply not allow gun violence to go unpunished in this community,” Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill said in a statement.

Jones faces a maximum prison sentence of up to 16 years. Sentencing information was not immediately available.
