SALISBURY, N.C. — A driver has been charged after a two-vehicle crash in Salisbury late Saturday night left three people dead, according to the Salisbury Police Department.
The collision occurred at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday, July 18, on Mooresville Road (N.C. 150) near Town Court.
Officers arrived to find one vehicle occupied by three people who had suffered critical injuries. Two occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant was flown to a hospital for treatment but later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Police said the second vehicle left the roadway after the collision and came to rest in a creek bed a short distance away.
With assistance from a Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office K-9 team, officers located the driver nearby. The driver was taken to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center before being transferred to a Charlotte-area hospital for additional treatment.
Following a preliminary investigation, Salisbury police charged 42-year-old Javiel Pena Sola with three counts of felony hit and run involving serious injury or death.
The identities of the three people who died have not been released pending notification of their families.
The Salisbury Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit continues to investigate the crash. Police said additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures on Mooresville Road while investigators continue processing the scene.
