MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Two people were shot while traveling on Interstate 77 in Mooresville on Sunday evening, and authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the Mooresville Police Department, officers responded to the southbound lanes of I-77 near Exit 35 for Brawley School Road after receiving reports of a shooting involving a vehicle. When officers arrived, they located a black Kia that had crashed after the occupants were struck by gunfire.
An adult woman suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. An adult man was also shot and transported for medical care. Authorities have not released his condition.
Investigators believe the shots were fired from another vehicle traveling on the interstate. Police have not determined where the shooting began and have not released a description of the suspect or the suspect vehicle.
The southbound lanes of I-77 were temporarily closed while investigators processed the scene. Traffic resumed after the investigation at the crash site was completed.
No arrests have been announced, and the identities of the victims have not been released.
Although witnesses have described the incident as a possible road rage shooting, the Mooresville Police Department has not confirmed a motive. The investigation remains active.
