A Davie County man has been charged with felony animal cruelty after authorities said an emaciated dog was found chained without food or water at a Mocksville property.

According to Davie County Animal Services, officers responded on July 21 to the 100 block of Pleasant Lane after receiving a report of a dog believed to be neglected.

When officers arrived, they found an adult female dog chained outside in what officials described as an extremely dangerous condition. Authorities said the dog had no access to food or water. Attempts to contact anyone at the residence were unsuccessful.

The dog was seized and taken to the Davie County Animal Shelter, where she was renamed “Justice” and placed under veterinary care.

A veterinarian determined Justice had a Canine Body Condition Score of 1 out of 9, indicating severe emaciation with an estimated body fat percentage of less than 5 percent. Officials said she was also suffering from multiple other health issues, and her prognosis remains guarded.

Investigators obtained a warrant charging Michael James Weston Jr., 24, with one count of felony cruelty to animals.

The Davie County Sheriff’s Office arrested Weston on July 24. He received a $2,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Davie County District Court on Sept. 24.

Authorities said Justice remains under veterinary supervision as she continues her recovery.
