MOCKSVILLE, N.C. , An 18-year-old Charlotte man has been charged after investigators said a group of suspects used a stolen vehicle in an attempted break-in at a Davie County gun store earlier this summer.
According to the Davie County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at about 4:30 a.m. on June 6 to Victory Arms, 1115 Yadkinville Road in Mocksville, after receiving a report of property damage.
When deputies arrived, they found a gray Hyundai Elantra that had been driven into the front entrance of the business. The vehicle was unoccupied, and investigators determined no one had entered the store.
Witnesses told deputies two people fled the scene in another vehicle before law enforcement arrived. As the investigation progressed, detectives determined five suspects were involved in the attempted break-in and escaped in a white Hyundai Elantra, while the disabled gray Hyundai was left at the scene.
The Mocksville Fire Department responded because the abandoned vehicle was leaking gasoline following the collision.
Investigators used Flock license plate camera technology to identify the vehicle used in the getaway. The information led Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers to the registered owners of the vehicles involved, who reported they were unaware their vehicles had been stolen.
The white Hyundai Elantra was later recovered in the Remount Road area of Charlotte and towed to the Davie County Sheriff’s Office for forensic processing.
Detectives with the Davie County Sheriff’s Office and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department worked together throughout the investigation, reviewing surveillance footage from Victory Arms, locations where the vehicles were stolen, and additional businesses.
Authorities said interviews and searches conducted in Charlotte led investigators to identify three of the five suspects.
Felony warrants were issued for Kymani Lamont Dawkins, 18, of Charlotte. He is charged with attempted breaking or entering a building and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Dawkins is being held at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Detention Center.
Juvenile petitions are also being sought against two juvenile suspects from Charlotte on charges of attempted breaking or entering a building and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Their identities have not been released because they are juveniles.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
