The Davie County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division and Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division were working in the area of U.S. Highway 64 and Interstate 40 on Aug. 8 when detectives stopped a dark-colored Ford pickup truck.
According to the sheriff’s office, detectives recognized the driver as someone whose license was suspended and reported observing suspicious activity in the area.
Detectives identified the driver as Corey Michael Stewart, 35, and the passenger as Christopher Lee Stephens, 25. Authorities said neither man had a valid driver’s license.
K-9 Briar conducted an open-air sniff around the vehicle and alerted to the presence of narcotics, according to the sheriff’s office. A subsequent search reportedly uncovered approximately 37 grams of methamphetamine and 1.69 grams of marijuana.
Detectives also reported finding a pair of brass knuckles on Stewart.
Investigators obtained warrants charging Stewart and Stephens with trafficking methamphetamine by possession, possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of up to one-half ounce of marijuana.
Stewart also was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office arrested both men on the warrants Aug. 11. Stewart and Stephens each received a $300,000 secured bond.
The Davie County Sheriff’s Office said additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
