ASHEBORO, N.C. — A contracted medical staff member has been charged after an investigation into cash reportedly stolen from employees’ belongings at the Randolph County Detention Center, according to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office received multiple reports Aug. 14 of cash being taken from personal belongings stored in a staff area of the detention center. The area is restricted from inmate access and used by personnel working at the facility.
Because of the nature of the allegations, the sheriff’s office Professional Standards Division opened an investigation.
Investigators said evidence identified a contracted medical staff member assigned to the detention center as the person responsible for the thefts. Approximately $200 in stolen cash was recovered during the investigation.
Shyrekia McKoy, 42, was arrested and taken before a Randolph County magistrate. She was charged with misdemeanor larceny.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that McKoy was a contracted medical staff member and said no Randolph County Sheriff’s Office employee was implicated in the thefts.
Sheriff Greg Seabolt said allegations involving employees or contracted personnel working in sheriff’s office facilities are taken seriously and investigated regardless of the person’s position or employer.
McKoy was released on a $1,000 unsecured bond. She is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 31.
