KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A bridge over Interstate 85 in Kannapolis will bear the name of a police officer who was killed in the line of duty more than three decades ago.
The North Carolina Board of Transportation on Thursday, Sept. 3, approved a resolution designating the Lane Street bridge over I-85 as the Officer Roger D. Carter Bridge.
The designation honors Roger D. Carter, a Kannapolis police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty on Dec. 31, 1993. He was 31.
According to the resolution, Carter was born in Iredell County in 1962 and graduated from South Rowan High School in 1981. He was a charter member of Charity Baptist Church in Kannapolis and played an instrumental role in the church’s building program.
Carter joined the Kannapolis Police Academy in 1989 and served with the Kannapolis Police Department for four years. He was also a member of the North Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association.
Carter was killed after responding to a residence on Nance Street to serve a warrant. He was ambushed as he exited his patrol vehicle, according to the Kannapolis Police Department.
The City Council of Kannapolis requested that the North Carolina Board of Transportation name the bridge in Carter’s honor.
The resolution officially designates the bridge carrying Lane Street, also known as S.R. 2180, over I-85 as the Officer Roger D. Carter Bridge.
Signs bearing Carter’s name will be installed at a later date.
