LEXINGTON, N.C. — A massive early morning fire tore through several historic uptown Lexington businesses Tuesday, destroying multiple storefronts including the longtime Candy Factory.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 100 block of North Main Street after reports of a commercial structure fire. Heavy flames and smoke could be seen pouring from the buildings as crews from multiple agencies worked to contain the fire.

Among the businesses heavily damaged or destroyed were The Candy Factory, Shoto Japanese, Main Street Pizza and Deli, and Bagel and More.

The fire spread rapidly through the connected downtown buildings, with portions of the structures collapsing during firefighting operations. Crews remained on scene for hours working hot spots and securing the area.

Roads surrounding downtown Lexington were shut down as emergency personnel responded.

The Candy Factory had operated in uptown Lexington for decades and was widely known across North Carolina for its homemade fudge, nostalgic candy selection, and Red Bird peppermint puffs. The business opened in 1978 and later moved into the historic former Lexington Hardware building.

No injuries had been publicly reported as of Tuesday. Officials have not released a cause of the fire.

Investigators are expected to begin examining the scene once conditions are safe.
