Winston-Salem Water Main Repairs Continue, Boil Water Advisory Remains

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities continues to make progress repairing a major water main break that disrupted water service this week, while a boil water advisory remains in effect for portions of Forsyth County.

The water main ruptured July 29 in a remote area beneath a manmade pond, creating significant challenges for repair crews. Utilities officials said excavation revealed the damaged water main is approximately 40 feet below ground.

Crews successfully isolated the damaged section of the water main, allowing workers to assess the damage and begin repairs. Officials said isolating the line helped restore operations at several critical facilities and significantly improved water pressure throughout the distribution system.

Water service has now been restored across the affected system, but Kernersville and Walkertown remain under a boil water advisory. Officials continue to advise residents in those areas to boil all water used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation for at least one minute before use, or use bottled water until the advisory is lifted.

Water quality testing continues in affected areas. The advisory will remain in effect until laboratory testing confirms the water is safe for consumption.

Utilities crews are also flushing fire hydrants throughout the affected area to remove trapped air and sediment from the system. Residents may notice water flowing from hydrants as part of the recovery process.

Forsyth County and the City of Winston-Salem will continue distributing bottled water to residents who remain under the boil water advisory. Distribution begins at 10 a.m. Friday, July 31, while supplies last, at the following drive-thru locations:

• Kernersville Elementary School, 512 W. Mountain St., Kernersville

• Walkertown High School, 5240 Sullivantown Road, Walkertown

Distribution is limited to one case of bottled water per vehicle to help ensure assistance reaches as many households as possible.

Officials are asking residents to remain patient, follow directions from volunteers and public safety personnel, and use caution while entering and exiting the distribution sites.

City and county officials also thanked community partners assisting with the response, including the American Red Cross, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina and Crisis Control Ministry, for helping provide support to affected residents.

Officials said they appreciate the community’s patience as utility crews continue working to complete repairs, restore normal operations and lift the boil water advisory as soon as water quality testing confirms the system is safe.
