MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Authorities have released new information in the shooting that occurred on Interstate 77 in Mooresville, saying the incident was not a road rage shooting as initially suspected.
According to the Mooresville Police Department, investigators determined the gunfire originated from inside the victims’ vehicle, not from another vehicle traveling on the interstate.
Police identified the suspect as 23-year-old J’Kobe Tre’shon Ramseur of Hickory, who was a passenger in the black Kia. Investigators allege Ramseur shot his 19-year-old girlfriend while she was driving southbound on I-77 near Exit 35 on July 26.
Detectives said evidence collected from the vehicle, including bullet trajectories, showed the shots were fired from inside the Kia. Investigators also recovered text messages that allegedly referenced a murder-suicide pact before the shooting.
The 19-year-old victim was initially airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. On Tuesday, authorities confirmed she died from her injuries.
Following her death, the charge against Ramseur was upgraded from attempted first-degree murder to first-degree murder. He remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The investigation remains ongoing.
