WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Winston-Salem man died after being shot early Saturday, and investigators believe the incident was targeted rather than a random act of violence, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.
Officers responded at approximately 12:53 a.m. on July 25 to a reported shooting in the 5000 block of Kimbrough Street. When officers arrived, they found 46-year-old James Lester Underwood suffering from a gunshot wound.
Underwood was transported by Forsyth County EMS to a local hospital, where he later died despite lifesaving efforts. Police said his next of kin has been notified.
The Winston-Salem Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is leading the homicide investigation. Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation and that additional confirmed information will be released as it becomes available. Investigators also stated the shooting does not appear to have been a random act of violence.
No suspect information or arrests had been announced as of Saturday evening.
