KERNERSVILLE, N.C. , woman is facing two counts of attempted first-degree murder after authorities said she pointed a handgun at Kernersville police officers during a late-night traffic stop, prompting both officers to open fire.
According to the Kernersville Police Department, the incident happened at approximately 11:16 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, when an officer observed a blue Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on South Main Street. The officer also reported seeing the vehicle weaving within its lane before initiating a traffic stop at the intersection of South Main Street and Old Winston Road on suspicion the driver was impaired.
Police said the driver became belligerent and refused repeated commands. Officers said the driver would not provide identification, roll down the window or exit the vehicle despite multiple attempts to gain voluntary compliance.
A second officer arrived to assist, and officers eventually forced entry through the driver’s side window after the driver continued refusing commands, according to police.
Investigators said the driver then pointed a handgun at the officers. Both officers fired their service weapons in response to what police described as an immediate threat. One round struck the driver in the shoulder.
The driver exited the vehicle after being shot, and officers immediately provided first aid until Emergency Medical Services arrived. The driver was taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Police identified the driver as 29-year-old Destiny Sanyee Fewell, who has listed addresses in Winston-Salem and Greensboro.
Fewell has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, resisting, delaying or obstructing a public officer, speeding and failure to maintain lane control. She was later booked into the Forsyth County Detention Center, where she is being held without bond.
The Kernersville Police Department requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The department is also conducting an internal review.
Officials said the incident was captured on officers’ body-worn cameras.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Lt. F. Sanchez with the Kernersville Police Department at 336-996-3000.
