CHINA GROVE, N.C. — A Mooresville man is facing multiple charges after an alleged disturbance during a field day event Tuesday morning at China Grove Elementary School.
According to court documents, officers responded to the school around 9:40 a.m. after staff reported a parent refusing to leave campus after being asked to do so by the principal.
Field day activities were taking place at the time of the incident.
The parent was identified as Justin Gray Morgan, 39, of Mooresville.
Court records allege Morgan grabbed two elementary school students by the arm during the incident. A teacher and the school principal attempted to intervene, at which point Morgan allegedly became disruptive and caused a larger disturbance.
Documents further allege Morgan grabbed one school employee by the arm and pushed another during the confrontation.
Officers with the China Grove Police Department and Rowan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and located Morgan in the school’s bus parking lot. Court documents state Morgan resisted officers and was taken into custody following a brief struggle.
Emergency medical personnel responded to evaluate Morgan for an injury before he was transported to the Rowan County Magistrate’s Office.
Morgan was charged with:
- Two counts of assault on a school employee
- Two counts of assault on a child under 12
- Disorderly conduct by disrupting school
- Disorderly conduct
- Resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer
- Two counts of ethnic intimidation
Court records allege Morgan yelled at teachers and students during the disturbance and made threats related to race or color, leading to the ethnic intimidation charges.
Morgan is scheduled to appear in Rowan County District Court on July 9.
