MOORESVILLE, N.C. — A former Lake Norman High School wrestling coach was found not guilty Tuesday by an Iredell County jury on charges stemming from allegations that he assaulted a student during a wrestling practice.
Stephen William Boyle had faced misdemeanor child abuse and simple assault charges following an incident that occurred in November 2025 at Lake Norman High School.
According to investigators, the allegations stemmed from an altercation during wrestling practice involving two students. Authorities claimed Boyle struck one of the students multiple times in the head while attempting to intervene. The student was later evaluated at a hospital, where medical personnel reportedly identified symptoms consistent with a concussion.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation after receiving reports of the incident. Boyle was subsequently arrested and charged with misdemeanor child abuse and simple assault.
Following his arrest, Boyle was placed on administrative leave by Iredell-Statesville Schools while the criminal case proceeded through the court system.
After hearing testimony and reviewing evidence presented during the trial, the jury returned a not guilty verdict on both charges Tuesday, clearing Boyle of all criminal allegations related to the incident.
No additional details regarding the jury’s deliberations or statements from attorneys involved in the case were immediately available.
The verdict concludes the criminal proceedings against Boyle related to the allegations that arose from the 2025 incident at the school.
