MOCKSVILLE, N.C. — Two Davie County men have been charged after authorities say they vandalized the newly installed decorative water fountain in the Mocksville roundabout, causing an estimated $1,000 in cleanup and repair costs.
According to the Davie County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on the morning of July 5 after Town of Mocksville employees discovered the fountain filled with foam at the roundabout located at the intersection of Wilkesboro Street, Meroney Street and Yadkinville Road.
Investigators determined that soap or detergent products had been poured into the fountain. Deputies documented the scene and recovered a container left in the water as evidence.
During the investigation, deputies canvassed the area for surveillance footage and worked with a local retailer to identify those responsible. Authorities said the investigation led to Caleb David Bailey, 19, of Mocksville, and Tyler Matthew Hutchens, 21, of Advance.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, both men admitted to their involvement in the incident.
Bailey was charged with felony common law damage to real property and misdemeanor littering involving less than 10 pounds of waste. He was released on a $15,000 unsecured bond. A judge also ordered Bailey to remain on house arrest with electronic monitoring through Pre-Trial Services.
Hutchens was charged with felony conspiracy. He received a $2,000 secured bond and was also ordered to remain on house arrest with electronic monitoring through Pre-Trial Services.
Both men are scheduled to appear in Davie County District Court on July 23.
Town of Mocksville officials estimate taxpayers will spend approximately $1,000 to clean and repair the decorative fountain.
The Davie County Sheriff’s Office said vandalism of public property is a criminal offense that can result in restitution and criminal charges. Officials also thanked local businesses and community members who assisted investigators during the case.
