LEXINGTON, N.C. — One person was killed and a critically injured pedestrian was being treated Monday after two connected traffic crashes in Lexington, including a collision involving a Davidson County EMS ambulance transporting the pedestrian to the hospital.
According to the Lexington Police Department, officers responded around 1 p.m. to the intersection of East Center Street and North Salisbury Street after receiving a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian.
When officers arrived, they found a 31-year-old man with critical injuries. Davidson County EMS transported the man from the scene to Lexington Medical Center. Investigators have not determined the cause of the initial crash.
About 21 minutes later, while the ambulance was traveling to the hospital, it was involved in a second collision on South Main Street near Prospect Drive.
Police said the driver of the other vehicle died at the scene from injuries suffered in the crash.
EMS personnel aboard the ambulance were evaluated after the collision and did not suffer major injuries.
Following the second crash, the injured pedestrian was transferred to another ambulance and taken to Lexington Medical Center before later being flown or transported to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He remains in critical condition.
The Lexington Police Department’s Traffic Crash Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate both crashes. Authorities have not released what led to either collision.
The identity of the driver who died in the second crash is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.
Police said additional information will be released as the investigations continue.
